The architecture: two ways in, one brain

A dual-WAN firewall connects to two internet sources — your primary (fiber or cable) and a backup (a different carrier, or cellular LTE/5G). The firewall monitors the primary continuously; when it fails, traffic shifts to backup in seconds, automatically, and shifts back when service restores. No one runs to a closet to swap cables.

Backup links are usually smaller, so the failover design decides what matters: voice, payments, and critical cloud apps ride the lifeboat first; bulk downloads and streaming wait. That's QoS policy applied to survival mode — configured in advance, invisible in the moment.

What it means for your phones

Hosted VoIP plus failover is a resilience combo landlines never offered: if the whole site loses power, calls still reach mobile apps and forwarding rules. The "phones are down" era genuinely can end.

Test it before you need it

An untested failover is a hope, not a plan. Scheduled failover tests (pull the primary, watch the switchover, time it) belong on the maintenance calendar.
